Ryanair announced in February that it would be investing over $150m in equipping its Brussels operation with three brand-new B737-800 aircraft.

These state-of-the-art aircraft are larger (189 seats) and much more environmentally friendly than the model they replace.

Routes to Rome and Liverpool are to be added to the Brussels network from 27th.June with fares starting at just 19(euros) one-way. With new routes and new aircraft, Ryanair predict that over 1.6m passengers will use BSCA in 2002/3.

Today(25th. April) is a double celebration for Ryanair. Seven Charleroi-based cabin crew are promoted to Senior Cabin Crew, and twenty new recruits receive their ‘wings’ at a ceremony at the airport. In addition Ryanair will employ eight additional pilots to crew the new aircraft, bringing the total Ryanair jobs in Belgium to eighty.

Speaking in Brussels today, Ryanair’s Director of Sales and Marketing Tim Jeans said “ Belgians love Ryanair! In the past year we have saved Belgian passengers over 100m (Euros) against the fares they would have been charged by Sabena and the other high fares carriers. We have met and exceeded all our business targets by carrying over 1m passengers through B.S.C.A, and are now investing in brand new aircraft, and creating new, highly paid jobs as our operation expands”.

Speaking for BSCA, Managing Director Laurent Jossart said (quote)

“Charleroi Airport is very pleased with its co-operation with the most successful low cost carrier in the world. Ryanair has been a key step in our development and has contributed to the creation of numerous direct and indirect jobs associated with the Airport and local activities. Ryanair has fruitfully integrated in its commercial schedule the daily opening hours of the Airport (from 6 a.m. to 23 p.m.) and will contribute to significant noise reduction with the operation of new generation aircraft, Boeing 737-800, from end of June 2002. Ryanair has also given us a critical mass making possible an expansion of our travel retail activities.

Furthermore, we are considered by Ryanair as an efficient entity with state-of-the-art ground handling services, allowing turnaround of the aircraft in 25 minutes. Thanks to Ryanair and as of April 19, 2002 we have reached one million passenger over the last 365 days. We are now definitively identified on the European map as a leading regional Airport and recognised as a fast growing and promising entity.”

Am 14. Februar 2003 werden wir dann die Zahlen für Hahn bekommen... (SNN auf alle Fälle besser, STN etwas schlechter)
