TAP Group and PGA-Portugalia Airlines concluded an MOU for the establishment of a "strategic association and for the sharing of support services." The collaboration will take advantage of the synergies between the networks, the carriers said in a statement. The MOU establishes a 90-day timeframe to arrive at a firm agreement. Both airlines denied local press reports that the deal could pave the way for a full merger, yet the statement said that with this initiative both parties show "a clear intention to contribute for the strengthening of the national air transportation business and, in particular, to offer a more enlarged service to the Portuguese market." It added that, since both TAP and PGA are active in specific market sectors and with specific business models, "it is recognized as beneficial to keep the individuality and identity of each airline company, betting on an operational rationalization, on the increase of codeshare operations and on the usage of common services." Both airlines already codeshare on some routes and recently Portugalia's handling activities were integrated into Servicos Portugueses de Handling, TAP's ground handling division that was spun off in a separate legal entity that is expected to be privatized next year.
