Von aviation week online:Chinese airlines are to buy 56 single-aisle and 12 twin-aisle transports from both Airbus and Boeing later this year, according to officials who have recently completed an evaluation exercise.

A separate order for 25 narrow-body Airbus aircraft carried forward from last year also will be firmed up later this year. Also pending is an order for 25 regional jets from Embraer for China Southern Airlines.

According to an air transport official in Beijing, the order for the 56 narrow-body transports will go to carriers backed directly by the Chinese government through the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), and to independent regional carriers.

The aircraft -- A320/A321s and 737-700s/800s -- are to meet expansion plans on domestic routes and increased service to Japan and South Korea.

The official, who declined to identify the carriers, spoke following an evaluation exercise that was completed recently by the CAAC and the independents.

Airbus is likely to gain the major portion of the narrow-body order. The European manufacturer's marketing has been increasingly strong over the past seven years, rising from 20 aircraft in service in 1995 to 115.

Nine carriers could fit the bill for added flights to South Korea and Japan. Eight are CAAC carriers, and the ninth is Haikou-based Hainan Airlines, which has municipal and private-sector backers.

The widebodies are to replace three MD-11s that China Eastern sold to China Cargo Airlines. The nine others are to replace A300-600Rs in China Northern and China Eastern's fleets. Five A340-600s (including three already ordered) and four 777s are on the list, officials said.

According to a study carried out by the China Institute for Aeronautic Systems Engineering, the Chinese airline industry will require 1,788 new aircraft from 2001-19. An average of 100 aircraft should be ordered every year up to 2018 to meet expected demand.
