Austrian Airlines Group announced a strategic network expansion to North Africa and the Middle East. Benghazi will become the second destination in Libya. Alexandria will see a four-times-weekly service to Vienna by summer. AAG plans to increase frequencies to Dubai, Teheran and Tel Aviv. "Until 2008 we want to nearly double our passenger figures from around 370,000 a year to around 620,000 passengers to and from this region," Chief Commercial Officer Josef Burger told ATWOnline. He added that if the security situation allows, Austrian wants to re-launch services to Baghdad with a minimum of three flights a week.

 

AAG flew 2.1 billion RPKs in Sept., up 19.7% over the year-ago period. It flew 2.7 billion ASKs, up 21.2%, with the result that load factor fell 1.6 points to 77.5%. Passengers totaled 938,000, up 11.1%.--Kurt Hofmann
