US Airways in deal to cut Airbus plane deliveries, get cash

WASHINGTON (AP) — US Airways, which is in bankruptcy, has reached a deal with Airbus to delay delivery of new planes.

The Arlington, Va.-based airline's deal with the European plane manufacturer would resolve various claims between the companies, according to court papers filed Monday.

The deal would end US Airways' rights or obligations to acquire 35 Airbus planes, delay delivery of other planes, and provide $6 million in cash to US Airways from conversion of credits it has with Airbus.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Alexandria, Va., will hold a hearing to consider approval of the deal on Jan. 27, following any objections that are due by Jan. 25.

US Airways, which filed for Chapter 11 in September, has been working hard to trim the size of its fleet. It plans to become a low-cost carrier focused on point-to-point flying on the East Coast and in the Caribbean.

The airline has its largest hub in Charlotte, N.C.

The agreement with Airbus is one of several US Airways have struck with airplane leaseholders and suppliers to defer or cancel purchases and restructure financings.

Airbus also gave the airline an extension on most of a $9 million payment that had been due Dec. 1, 2004. The company has paid $3 million of the total and can pay the remainder on Jan. 27.

Separately, US Airways filed a motion Monday, as expected, seeking authorization to enter into fuel hedging arrangements.

With jet fuel costs at historic highs, US Airways said it hasn't seen substantial benefits in hedging since it filed for Chapter 11, but anticipates such transactions "may soon be advantageous."

Class A shares of US Airways rose 1 cents to $1.15 in late trading on the over-the-counter Bulletin Board.
