CHINA Southern Airlines launched its Shenzhen-Shanghai-Li¨¨ge (in Belgium) cargo flight Wednesday.

At 4:30 p.m., a Boeing 747-400, leased from Atlas Air Inc. of the United States, took off from the Shenzhen Bao¡¯an International Airport on its maiden flight.

The return flight is scheduled Tuesday and Friday every week.

This is the first cargo flight from Shenzhen to Europe. According to a source at the company¡¯s international transport department, Li¨¨ge has Europe¡¯s only exclusive cargo airport.

Earlier this year, China Southern Airlines bought two Boeing 747-400s and started Shenzhen-Shanghai-Chicago and Shenzhen-Los Angeles cargo flights.

So far, the company has China¡¯s largest fleet of B747 freighter aircraft.

As one of China¡¯s largest airline companies, China Southern Airlines owns 180 aircrafts and 666 air routes. Its cargo shipments comprise one quarter of the nation¡¯s air transport.

It is understood that freight from Shenzhen comprises one third of that of Hong Kong.
