PB Air's new fleet basis for expansion of services

PB Air, one of Thailand's privately owned carriers, is ushering in a new era with a complete fleet revamp and by honing its plan for business expansion in a climate geared to freer competition.

The airline, which celebrates its 12th anniversary this month, is releasing its entire fleet of three ageing Fokker 28-4000 jetliners and replacing it with two new but smaller Brazilian-made Embraer jets.

The carrier, which at one time attempted to offer inter-continental services, now seems to be focused on becoming a domestic airline with scheduled services to exotic destinations in neighbouring countries.

In an interview, PB Air president Jothin Pamon-Montri described the fleet revamp as a key to the carrier's plan to streamline its operation to suit its growth plan as well as to provide a better product and service.

Given limited traffic, one of the airline's three Fokkers, which have an average age of 22 years, has been idle.

The new ERJ 145LR jets each carry 50 passengers, compared with 75 on a Fokker 28-4000, and fly faster than the aircraft they replace. The Embraer is said to be more advanced and manages a cruising speed of 600 km/hour compared with the Fokker's 512 km/hour.

The new aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce engines, will be leased under an arrangement that calls for the supplier to take the three Fokkers from PB Air. Details of the lease and the name of the company providing the new aircraft were not disclosed.

The first Embraer is expected to launch PB Air's Saen Sabai (very comfortable) service around Christmas, with the second aircraft entering service soon afterward.

Capt Jothin said the capacity provided by the two aircraft better suited PB Air's present and future requirements because both aircraft would be utilised fully from 7 am to 9 pm every day.
