Hi,

Further to some information in this thread, Concise Aerospace has a report that the German government is refusing airlines from Moldova landing rights in Frankfurt, and it all has its roots in the Moldovan government decision to basically screw around with the airline industry in that country.

A bit of background....

* In September 2002, 49% owner of Air Moldova (9U), Germany company Unistar, had it holding in the airline voided by the Moldovan goverment (51% owner). The Chisinau Government claims that this was because of problems regarding payments for 9U's ERJ-145, but the German company says it was because the Moldovan's went ahead with unauthorised changes to the 9U management.

* In October 2002, the government in Chisinau decided that they were going to nationalise ground handling at Chisinau Airport (Chisinau Airport Services - CAS), and also revoke the operating licence of privately owned Air Moldova International (RM). All route authorities of Air Moldova International would be handed over to the state-owned 9U. The government claimed that the licence was revoked because RM refused to follow air safety regulations (bull*cough*shit)

* On 26th November 2002, this was basically made public, and employees of both CAS and RM were told that they no longer had employment.

* Plans were made by RM to charter a Cirrus Airlines (C9) ERJ-145 to fly the FRA-KIV route on their behalf. On 26 & 27 November the flights went ok.

* On 28 November the government in KIV refused C9's application for rights to fly into KIV

* On 29 November, the already "scheduled" C9 flight was forced to land at Iasi (in Romania) and RM used some buses to ferry passengers to KIV. The Moldovan CAA stated "the company (that being RM) had misled the passengers, knowing in advance that the plane would land in Iasi and would be collected by buses from Air Moldova International which had sold tickets for the flight". The CAA also complained that RM told passengers that the CAA was responsible for the reroute thru Iasi.....well actually, the CAA was responsible. They were the ones who cancelled RM's AOC without good reason. They were the ones who would not allow C9 to land at Chisinau Airport. One has to laugh at the audacity of the CAA for even having the nerve to "complain"

Now the Germans are denying landing rights at FRA for Moldovan airlines, because the Moldovans are refusing the allow Cirrus Airlines landing rights at KIV. This might not seem like that big a deal, but the KIV-FRA route is the most important and most profitable route for the Moldovan airlines (and it is obvious that RM's AOC was revoked for this reason), so the future of the Moldovan airline industry could very well rest in what happens in the future in regards to this route.

It is about time that those in power in Chisinau realised that they are signing their own "death warrants" by nationalising and interfering with the airline industry, especially when there is no real problem; the only problem I see is that those have an involvement with 9U (where, by the way, corruption is rife, from what I have been told by independent sources in Moldova) are pissed at having a well run privately owned airline operating on routes on which they feel they should have the "right" to.

Just wondering if anyone out there in Germany has any info from their side which they can add to this?
