Plane Stuck In Mud Keeps Angkor Wat Airport Shut

July 6, 2005

Cambodia's Siem Reap Airport, gateway to the Angkor Wat temples, was still closed on Wednesday after a Vietnam Airlines Airbus A320 slid off the runway and got stuck in the mud, officials said.

"It was raining very hard yesterday, and the tyres have become stuck," deputy airport director Mao Sopheap said.

"Cambodia does not have technical experts to solve these problems. Thai experts who have been asked to help us should arrive today," he said.

The plane, which was carrying around 90 passengers, slid off the runway on Tuesday evening as it turned to taxi to the terminal. The passengers, most of them European tourists, and crew were taken off safely.

The plane is about 60 metres (200 feet) off the runway.

There was no immediate word on the reopening of the airport, through which thousands of tourists travel to the 800 year old Angkor temples, the impoverished southeast Asian nation's main tourist attraction.

"It could take some time," Mao Sopheap said.

Cambodia's Siem Reap Airport, gateway to the Angkor Wat temples, reopened on Thursday after a Vietnam Airlines Airbus A320 that skidded off the runway and became stuck in the mud was removed, officials said.

"We resumed operations at midnight. Everything is back to normal and we are sorry for any inconvenience," said Chun Sivorn, a senior civil aviation official.

The plane, which was carrying around 90 passengers, most of them European tourists, slid off the runway in heavy rain on Tuesday evening.

Nobody was injured, although the airport, which has up to 35 daily flights in the dry season and 23 in the June-to-October rainy season, was closed throughout Wednesday while officials worked out how to get the plane out of the mud.

Eventually, four trucks were used to pull the plane from its resting place 60 metres (200 feet) off the runway.

Impoverished and war-scarred Cambodia had more than one million visitors in 2004, most of the them drawn by the 800 year old Angkor Wat temple complex.
