Spanish airline Spanair said Thursday it hoped to bring on stream two weekly direct flights to China with an option for a third thereafter.

The mooted flights would be from Barcelona's El Prat airport to Shanghai and Beijing, a company spokeswoman said, adding Spanair has been canvassing politicians for support.

Spain, the world's second most popular tourist destination behind France, is determined to capitalise on the nascent Chinese tourist market with Beijing having recently signed an Authorised Destination Status accord with the European Union allowing Chinese tourists to travel to 22 EU states on visas.

In recent weeks, both national carrier Iberia and Air Europa have indicated they are interested in opening direct routes to Beijing and Shanghai and last week media reports said Spain's ministry for tourism and industry had suggested as much to Iberia.

Only Iberia currently has permission to run an air link from Spain to China but the carrier concluded last year that such a service would likely not be viable in view of potentially weak demand.

That led to Air Europa saying it would be ready to step in if the Spanish civil aviation authorities gave the company the go-ahead to move in on what the carrier saw as "a priority market."

Spanair said it hoped to position itself to win permission for the link in the coming months.

Tourism is a major earner for Spain, accounting for 12 percent of gross domestic product. Last year the country received 52.47 million foreign visitors.
